Home Office UK using Grabba data Capturing device

Fingerprint scanners on smartphones aren’t large enough to capture the detail needed to check against these national databases. The Home Office opted to use handheld scanners that connect to the smartphones that officers carry. Immigration officers scan the tips of two fingers and these are checked against a database of detailed prints taken from suspects that have been held in police custody.

The Grabba device also captures passport details at border control allowing officers to match data in an efficient and timely manner.

UK police are now using fingerprint scanners to identify people in less than a minute

250 scanners have been distributed to West Yorkshire Police Force and its officers.

“Most of the people we deal with from a criminal point of view tend not to carry anything with them that would identify them,” says Ian Williams, a chief inspector with West Yorkshire Police.

“Officers previously were required to take individuals into police custody in order to have their fingerprints taken. A process that used to take several hours can now be completed within a few minutes.”
